Say what you need without losing your voice
Texting frequency, time alone, uncomfortable jokes: practice a clear boundary by naming the situation and the action you need.
In this guide
You can care about someone without feeling comfortable with every message, request, or joke. Naming discomfort does not mean you value the relationship less. Explaining what works for you and what does not can help both people understand the relationship more realistically.
Describe an event, not a personality
“You’re always clingy” can turn the discussion into an argument about who someone is. “When I receive repeated calls during work because I have not replied, I find it difficult to focus” describes something concrete. Talk about your experience without claiming to know their motives.
Make the requested action clear
I can’t check messages straight away while I’m working. Unless it’s urgent, I’ll respond after work. Please don’t call repeatedly when my reply takes a while.
This is easier to understand than “Text me a reasonable amount.” At the same time, avoid promising a communication schedule you cannot maintain. Discuss something that fits your actual day.
When a joke does not feel funny
I’m not comfortable with jokes about my appearance. I’d like you to stop making them.
You do not need a perfect argument to explain a boundary. If the behavior continues after you have clearly asked for it to stop, consider what distance you need, rather than assuming the solution must be better wording.
Offer the same room in return
If they ask for an evening alone, avoid demanding an exhaustive explanation. Respect their time while also considering whether the relationship meets your own needs. Consideration does not require erasing what matters to you.
In Karizz’s dating coach, separate the event, your feelings, and the boundary you want to express. Review the suggestions and choose wording you can realistically stand behind. If there is a threat or a safety concern, prioritize distance and support from someone you trust over finding the perfect message.
