Your partner is on their phone during a date, and you are tempted to ask, “Do you like that thing more than me?” You may not want a comparison. You want a few minutes when you are both in the same conversation.

Two coffees, one interrupted story

Jisu and Minho are fictional adults in this café story and its short video. After work, Jisu starts telling Minho about her day. Another notification arrives. He looks down.

“I'm listening,” he says, still checking his screen.

Jisu loses her place. She nearly asks why he bothered coming. What she actually wants is to finish her story without competing with a work chat.

What to say when your partner is on their phone

Start with what just happened, how it felt, and one request they can answer.

You've been checking notifications while I've been talking, and I feel disconnected. Could we put our phones away and talk for ten minutes?

Keep the focus on this moment rather than deciding what kind of person they are. You do not have to apologize for wanting attention.

Ten minutes is a manageable example, not a proven formula. Suggest a walk or the rest of dinner if that fits better. Then leave room for an answer.

What if work really is urgent?

Minho might need to confirm a schedule change. That does not automatically mean Jisu must wait indefinitely.

Take care of the urgent part. I'd like to talk when you're done. How long do you think you need?

If it will take a moment, you can agree to resume afterward. If there is no clear end, another choice is reasonable:

It sounds like you need to focus on work tonight. I'm going to head home. Let's find another time when we're both available.

Be honest about how long you want to wait. You can discuss shared time without demanding to inspect their messages.

When the phone goes away

In this fictional version, Minho finishes one urgent reply and pockets his phone. “Sorry. What did your manager say?” Jisu picks up her story.

One calmer conversation does not settle every future disagreement. This time, they found a workable pause.

You can simply say, “I'm glad we have a minute together.” Return to your story instead of testing whether they remember every detail. If you need a starting point, choose one of these questions for sharing experiences.

When the same request keeps getting dismissed

If “Why are you making a big deal?” repeatedly replaces any agreement, finding more careful wording is not your only option.

I've said that I need some conversation when we're together. If you need to stay on your phone tonight, I'm going to leave. We can discuss what works for future dates another time.

Make it a choice you will follow through on, not a threat designed to get a reaction. Notice whether later actions match an agreement. A distracted evening and an ongoing pattern deserve different consideration.
